On Thursday May 22nd, 2025, the Brooklyn Association of Teen Educators (BATES) Network, a project of the Adolescent Education Program (AEP) based at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University (SUNY Downstate), under the leadership of Christine Rucker, Director of AEP and founder of the BATES Network, hosted its 2nd Annual Health, Education and Career Summit. The Summit was a transformative event designed to inspire, inform, and ignite growth in every stage of life for young people. It brought together leading voices in healthcare, education, and workforce development, for an evening of expert-led sessions, interactive workshops coined T.E.D. (Transformative Educational Discussions) Talks, and meaningful networking opportunities for young people from all five New York City boroughs. The Summit presented a multi-dimensional platform tailored specifically for youth, and allowed professionals, educators and health advocates, to explore pathways to personal and professional advancement. From cutting-edge healthcare solutions to lifelong learning opportunities and career strategies, this event bridged the gaps between wellbeing, knowledge, and success, while empowering youth to begin to actively navigate the path to their future.
The Summit, which was co-sponsored by the Health and Education Alternatives for Youth (H.E.A.T.) Program and the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health also based at SUNY Downstate, brought together over 200 youth and service professionals. The current members of the BATES Network, which came together over thirty years ago, are New York City Teens Connection, Project Reach Youth, Diaspora Community Services, Community Counseling and Mediation, Public Health Solutions, Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB), CAMBA YAS and CAMBA BOP, who worked together in the spirit of community, collaboration and shared mission, to plan and execute an event that created lasting positive changes. By pulling together as a network they were able to collectively impact the lives of youth, while offering an inclusive and empowering event. Planned for youth primarily by youth, the Summit allowed adults and youth to work together collaboratively, which is a primary objective of the BATES Network. The shared planning and execution of such landmark events creates lasting impacts that are more than the sum of the efforts.
