The STAR Program is proud to celebrate Maria Jimenez, Care Coordinator, who has been selected as a 2025 Downstate Resiliency Award recipient in the Advocate category.
The Resiliency Awards recognize members of the SUNY Downstate community whose leadership, compassion, and teamwork advance the University’s mission and values. Maria’s recognition as an Advocate highlights her unwavering commitment to patient-centered care and her remarkable ability to empower those she serves.
For more than a decade in social services and health care, Maria has been a steady source of guidance and advocacy for individuals navigating complex systems—from families experiencing homelessness to people living with HIV. Since joining STAR in 2021, she has brought that same dedication to ensuring that every patient feels heard, supported, and informed. Colleagues describe her as a trusted ally who “goes above and beyond to ensure patients are receiving the absolute best care” and “creates a supportive atmosphere where colleagues feel comfortable seeking advice or assistance.”At the STAR Health Center, Maria supervises patient navigators, coordinates care for people with HIV and other chronic conditions, and works across disciplines to ensure timely access to treatment, social supports, and preventive care. Her empathy, professionalism, and leadership embody the spirit of resilience that this award celebrates.
Maria accepted her award at the Downstate Honors event on September 30, 2025, surrounded by STAR colleagues and leadership. “Maria’s tireless advocacy for our patients and colleagues makes her a perfect choice for this honor,” said Dr. Jack DeHovitz, STAR Program Director.
Congratulations, Maria—your compassion and commitment continue to inspire the entire STAR family.
